Overview

Rangoon, the Irrawaddy Delta's most prominent port and Burma's capital from 1886 to 2005, encompasses an area of about 1000 square kilometers. Once a huge populated swamp and forest, the British who seized Lower Burma in 1855 cleaned and farmed part of it. It then became Asia's rice basket, successfully feeding most of the Indian Raj. During the 1920s, the Irrawaddy Flotilla Corporation had over 100 stream steamers running across the Delta, linking these cities and villages at a period when there were no highways or bridges.
Contrary to popular belief, these vast marshes are not boring, and there is plenty of human appeal in the shape of charming villages, marketplaces, temples, churches, and mosques.

Our 7 Night Irrawaddy Delta itinerary enables a relaxed exploration of this fascinating region, starting and returning to Rangoon.
