Start for an outstanding Mandalay sightseeing tour to the former capitals of Ava, Sagaing, and Amarapura.

You reach Sagaing in the morning by crossing a bridge over the Irrawaddy River, which is home to 600 pagodas and monasteries with white paint. Many people believe that Sagaing Hill, which is home to 3,000 monks and 100 meditation institutions, is Myanmar’s spiritual hub. You have the opportunity to learn about several well-known pagodas in the area which were built from 14th to the 18th century including Swan Oo Pon Nya Shin and U Min Thone Sae.

Keep traveling south to the Ava capital. From there, you can take a short boat journey across the river to a waiting horse-drawn carriage that will transport to the historic wooden Bagaya Monastery, the Royal Palace, and the Fort. You can explore this region by horsecart and are welcomed into little villages situated amidst the ruins of Ava to obtain a glimpse of everyday life in rural Burma. Before continuing the tour, you may have your own lunch in Ava.

Reverse your direction to the city and stop at Amarapura, the formerly reigning capital whose name translates to “City of Immortality”. You will take a tour of a silk weaving studio or stroll across U Bein, a 200-year-old bridge made of 984 teak pillars that were a part of the abandoned Inwa Palace. The longest teak span in the world, U Bein, is 1.2 kilometers long. You can wander along the bridge and take in the stunning views of the nearby farmland and streams.

In the late afternoon, you are brought back to Mandalay center to complete the fascinating experience.
