Mount Popa, located in central Myanmar, is a dormant volcano 1518 meters above sea level, so it possesses a natural uniqueness. Popa means “flowers” in the Sanskrit word puppa. It has become a pilgrimage site where many Nat temples and relics are situated. Among them, the stunning Popa Taungkalat Shrine is the most famous site, and visitors must conquer 777 steps with no shoes and shocks to reach it. This place is a sacred and mysterious attraction with a gold stupa. There are many destinations and activities to see and discover!

First, let’s see the breathtaking Mt Popa. On the mount, there is a Buddhist monastery, and it also offers an excellent view from above, covering all the site’s images. You can feel like a giant after achieving the highest point. Surrounding places are arid, so it is like an oasis in a desert-like dry area in Burma. However, amounts of money have lived here and become a tourist attraction. It is not a joke, but they often steal small things from travelers, especially glasses, so be careful on the road. In addition, butterflies and birds also choose this mount as a home. This place nurtures many newly discovered species and the rare as well. Popa Taungkalat Shrine, on the top, is an important religious site for the locals and a place to pray on any occasion. After a long working day, it can be the best option for relaxing and feeling peace.

Some legends are told below

Based on their old stories, it is forbidden to wear red, green black while visiting Mount Popa and take meat (especially pork) due to the fear of offending the nats.

Popa langur is a newly discovered species, and they are nearly extinct with 200 individuals left. They are unique in greyish fur and spectacle-like eye patches. They are mischievous and not scared of people, so the visitors feel free to feed and take photos with them.

In King Anawrahta’s dynasty, the locals sacrificed hundred of animals during the festival, namely, the full moon day of Nayon in June and Nadaw in December. However, this kind of worshipping does not exist, and people come here to wish luck for the coming year.

If you have any wishes, travel here and say them to the Buddha. They can come true one day!
